Whaddya mean, that's the end?
Okay, this is the last volume of the main storyline in Vampire Knight. Warning: I do spoil a smidge, but I'll try to limit the damage. Okay? Okay!At the end of Volume 18, Yuki was erasing Zero's memories of her, while using her bracelet to keep him immobile. Once she finished, she went back to Kaname, determined to sacrifice herself to make him human. Meanwhile, Kaname is set on sacrificing himself to the Hunter's Furnace to forge new weapons for the Hunters to keep the other vampires in check. It gets pretty messy after this, in an exaggerated soap opera way. Most of the vampires are determined to kill Kaname, even if they turn humans into vampires against their will and so on. Zero has people bugging him about the blanks in his memory (due to Yuki's meddling), and the Hunters don't know who to trust. Finally, most of the vampires attack the Hunters building to try to kill Kaname. This is kind of where I have to stop delineating plot. Sorry. There is a resolution that ends the fight, really just setting the lines back to almost where they were when the whole story started. Yuki doesn't actually choose either Kaname or Zero, events just force her hand somewhat. And most of the supporting cast-- Kain, Takuma, Shiki, Rima, Seiren, Kaien, Touga, Kaito and so on-- don't get any further story. There is a time skip before the "real" end, and it also is a bit confusing. And then it's over. There's a lot that's okay, and I pretty much can accept the ending, even though few characters make any real progress. I know others are unhappy with the way it ended, and as I said, there is a very tangled soap opera plot around the battle to kill Kaname. Even so, if you made it this far, you might be okay with the ending, too. I heard that Matsuro Hino wrote a bonus chapter set more or less within the time skip, but don't know more.Still, pretty boys, silly heroine... And it's done.
