Vietnamese Children's Favorite Stories (Favorite Children's Stories)

I’m half way through the book but it bothers me too much i have to stop to write this review. While the author did a good job keeping all the characters’ name in Vietnamese, some of the important details in some stories were either left out or changed to a less common or unknown version. (Spoiler alert) For example, the gifts that the King asked Son Tinh and Thuy Tinh brought were very unique. He asked for an elephant with nine tusks, a rooster with nine spurs, and a horse with nine groups of mane hair. This detail is widely known in Vietnam. Why changed the gifts to common things like pearls, flowers. Ect.. I understand there are different versions depending on the regions. However, if you want to introduce the popular Vietnamese favorite stories to the world (the reason why these stories were told in English), why not picked the most popular one? I have more examples but i’m lazy to type now. I will just have to explain to my son the difference when i read him these stories in Vietnamese.

I bought this for my nephew as I wanted him to be familiar with some of his heritage and background. I ended up reading through the entire book myself and my husband, who's Indian, loved all the stories as well. This book provides a vehicle for my nephew to connect with his history and background and have an understanding of where some of the culture and tradition come from. I would definitely buy this for my own kid. The pictures are beautiful and the stories are easy to follow with a good layout.

I really love this book. It contains many short stories and each taught my kids a lesson. My kids were excited and couldn't wait each night for a new story. I definitely would recommend this book for parents! I wish there are more. I would buy them in a heartbeat!

Both my husband and I are Vietnamese immigrants. I bought this book for bedtime reading and to help my kids understand a little more about the Vietnamese culture. To my surprise, we couldn't put the book down. Every story was entertaining and captivating. My 8 yo read on his own and loved it. Not only did it kept the kids engaged, we learned from it too and it brought back so many of my childhood memories. My only wish is that there could be diacritic signs on the Vietnamese words so I can read it with correct pronunciation. Other than that, it's a great book.

This was purchased for a first grade Vietnamese student. It's a bit difficult for her to read herself yet. She told me she loves the stories and there are some she hadn't heard before. She's enjoying reading it with family members.

Love the illustrations and easy to read nature. I wish there was the cremation story, but plenty of other favorites to read.

I was born in Vietnam and moved to the US when I was 7. I remember these stories being told when I was younger. I've since forgotten them though so it was nice to read them again. I mainly got this book for my daughter who was born in the US. I do wish that there the book was divided in two sections - English and Vietnamese.

I purchased this book because of the historical value I found in the artwork of the illustrations. This gift also opened up a wonderful conversation with an English as a second language teacher.If you are looking for a culture appropriate gift, this is the book for you. If you are looking for something in the lines of art appreciation, this is also a product for you.

Excellent story book , well written, good choice of stories and warm feeling when reading. The author is deserved to receive the Prize for this children book. A big congratulations and thank you for writing such beautiful children story book.

Good mix of stories, good illustrations but wish the paper was magazine quality

My daughter loves these stories. So do I.
