Secrets of My Hollywood Life

Irresistable and Charming
Kaitlin Burke is an exemplary teenager: she is unfailingly courteous, kind and considerate of the feelings of others. It is hard not to be a little bit cynical about that, though. This is a girl who has been featured in a popular and long-running television series since she was a toddler. She has had big-screen success, and she is well-respected by her peers. She lives a largely programmed and sheltered existence, and she is restless for opportunities to experience new things. She is loved by her family, but it is also true that they tend to exploit her and sometimes treat her as a commodity. It just seems unrealistic that she is so lacking in vanity and arrogance.Still, I had no problem overlooking this quibble and accepting the proposition that Kaitlin has overcome the traps of temptation that have destroyed so many that live privileged existences. In addition to an innate decency, she has the benefit of a small group of intensely loyal friends who never engage in cheap flattery. The reader will like those friends, and, like them, he or she will like Kaitlin.Kaitlin wishes to live life as a "normal" teenage girl for a short time, and she concocts a plan to enroll in the high school attended by her only non-celeb friend, Liz. She completely disguises herself and establishes a false identity as a recent immigrant from Britain. The bulk of the book comprises her adventures in high school and the important life lessons that she learns. The reader will probably anticipate the climactic highlight of her experiment before she does, but that recognition in no way lessens the pleasure of reading it.When I finished, I was somewhat surprised to realize how much I had enjoyed the book. The plot is entertaining, the characters are delightful, and the writing is clever and breezy. I am going to read the remaining books in the series.

A Favorite of Mine Still to This Day
I remember reading this book at 16 and I absolutely fell in love with it. I decided to reread it recently 12 years later because I missed the sense of wonder and nostalgia it brought me. It still holds up even at the age of 28. The realism is and will always be my favorite about Kaitlin’s character. It holds up the rest of time and would 100% recommend to todays youth as well!

The grass is always greener...
Kaitlin Burke is used to being swarmed and adored wherever she goes - she is, after all, one of the stars of the hot long-running show Family Affair. But part of her has always wondered what it would be like to be ordinary. At 16, Kaitlin has spent her school years with a private tutor. Now she wants to give high school a try, but how? She would immediately be recognized and all over the news. So with the help of her makeup and hair team, she comes up with "Rachel," a British exchange student totally unlike her real self.As much as she enjoys her time at Clark Hall, Kaitlin is always intensely conscious of the fact that she's only got two months there - and terrified of being found out. As she begins to make some really great friends, there's a pang about lying to them. How can she make them understand that "Rachel" is really her true self?Readers will enjoy the voice of Kaitlin, both funny and real, as well as those of her friends and assistants.

YA book I picked up at the used book sale at my local library
Yes I read the whole thing and it was enjoyable, but there were some things in this one that clearly bothered me. Besides telling a synopsis of the story (which I will not do), all a review is really just an opinion. This is my opinion only, these things would most likely not even think these were perceived flaws. The first thing was when the main character and her friend went out for pizza. What drove me nuts was that pizza was referred to as "pie". I immediately looked to see where the author was from an sure enough she was from New York. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, and no one on the west coast (unless it is an east coast transplant) would ever refer to a pizza as a pie. Maybe it just reminded me of when I was a teenager in prehistoric times (1977) and a guy called and asked what kind of pies we had. Well, since I was born and raised in L.A. I had never heard of a pizza being called a pie, so I told him "apple, cherry and lemon" I still remember how he yelled at me and called me names. I had no idea why, until he said the word "pizza", I don't know, but it really rubbed me the wrong way. The other part I didn't like was it seemed that every character was an extrovert, so I couldn't relate to any of them real well. My mom was a "Hollywood mother" who pushed me to be an actress when I was 5 years old, while my sister made it into "the business" (yes, it is called that and it's true most people there want a part of it) I did not and had no interest. The last thing that I didn't really like was the description of the clothes. When I read about her mom's PB&J Coutour I pictured a woman sandwiched inside a Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a very large sandwich to say the least. I guess clothes are to women as action is to men, but I only wear clothes from the thrift store, so I just skimmed all those descriptions. The rest of it was a fun read and quick, but I don't think I will be reading the rest of the books. If being a movie star, fame and the description of shamatas is your thing, I would say that it is a five star winner.

Best. Book. EVER!!!
I totally love this book. It's like my fave book ever. It's a total page turner, and it totally teaches an important life lesson: Don't let ANYONE bring you down, no matter what. In fact, two: There is no perfect life. You just need to enjoy what you have. Again, I LOVE this book!
