Q: approx. how many coins can this hold?

Hello Matt - the Coin-Mate can hold 18 coins although I have heard of customers fitting 21 coins in it. One side has slots for nickels dimes and pennies and the other side fits quarters but you can put all quarters in your Coin-Mate for a total of $4.50. One nice feature is the twist lock outer ring that will keep the coins from falling out.

Q: On the non-quarter side, is it possible to load it up with just pennies? will they still stay in place?

Thank you for your question. You can load pennies on that side in all slots and they will stay in place. Additionally if you don't load any quarters you can load more pennies in the slots . Thank you, Scott

Q: Will it hold Japanese yen?

Yes - it will hold the 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100 Japanese yen coins. The 500 yen coin is 26.5 mm diameter and it should fit in the quarter slots which hold the US quarters which are 24.26 mm diameter
