Micro-Mesh Finishing Set

Hands down, this is the longest lasting “sandpaper” you’ll find. If you only use it for paintwork, it may last indefinitely for a hobbyist.I received a Micromesh kit for use in my Aviation tech schooling, and that was 8 years ago. I still have that kit (it’s only 1500-6000, and 1 of each versus 2 of each that come in this box) and am just now burning up a couple of the grits it came with.I’m currently refinishing a set of aluminum wheels and have just been blowing through sandpaper in record time. I was using the new 3M, soft backed sandpaper sheets that are supposed to last much longer than standard sandpaper rolls. ..And they do, they work very well and don’t fall apart. But, at like $8 for 3 pieces and still using a whole package for one wheel, it was still getting consumed quickly.I decided to bring out my old Micromesh kit, and I’m getting about 10x the life out of these as I was with the 3M pieces. Not to say the 3M ones are not good, they are really great - they’re just not holding up to my heavy duty needs. The Micromesh pieces are phenomenal for heavy duty use, even though they were designed to just be a long-lasting finishing kit.It’s important to note that the 1500-12000 grit of Micromesh IS NOT equivalent to standard sandpaper grits. 1500 grit Micromesh = 600 grit standard, 1800 grit Micromesh = 800 grit standard, and so on. The 12000 grit feels like a waxed piece of paper. I imagine grits that high are used on acrylics or other transparent materials.I’m anticipating only using 3-4 of the sheets in this kit in my project, and only using up one of the 2 pieces that it comes with.It looks expensive for what you get, but if you compare it to how much regular sandpaper you’d go through and time/hassle getting more sandpaper through the project when you don’t have enough, you’ll thank yourself for getting this kit. If you’re getting this for light duty applications like paintwork, you’ll be incredibly happy with how practical this kit is.
