I mean, it's the Lord of the Rings. It's in Arabic. It's better in English (as most books are better in their original language) but it's interesting to see how the translator rendered it, and how certain situations do render themselves cross-culturally. I think the gravity of LOTR lends itself well to classical languges, such as formal Arabic. I respectfully disagree with calling the elves 'the jinn', and I thought the 'rings' poem could have been less literal and more poetic, but that's the translator's prerogative! This can line the shelves of Tolkien fans next to the Latin edition of LOTR, particularly since dedicated Tolkien fans tend to be multilingual. Wait...is this review supposed to be in Arabic?

The book arrived in good condition. I'm enjoying working on my Arabic with one of my favorite books.The paper is newspaper quality. Since I am using this as a textbook ,I'd have preferred a higher quality paper but I just photocopy and enlarge it page by page.- i agree with the reviewer who said that for students of Arabic + who love LOTR this is a great way to learn the language.- I have a question for those who know Arabic a whole lot better than me: Some terms are translated in a circuitous way. My assumption was that this was necessary because Arabic doesnt have a clear equivalent to the English. But I am not sure this is a quality translation because of a howler I came across in the first two pages of An Unexpected Party. Bilbo's age when he begins to be known as "well-preserved" is given as 91, and not, as Tolkein has it, at 99. This mistake is repeated a few paragraphs on.So, my question is: otherwise, does the translator do a good job?

the book is great, a bit bulky but font is large enough. As mentioned in other posts it is a much better read in english, but for the few lotr fans out there trying to learn arabic it is a nice bridge into reading original arabic books which the Anglo-saxon mindset will have more difficulty in comprehending.Overall I'd say the only reason it is not a 5 stars is that the product came slightly damaged (signs of mishandling during shipping). As it apparently did for other customers.

The book (and both of its brethren) are about the only translation of the Lord of the Rings that I've discovered in Arabic. They are very literally translated, so that for the most part I found it easy to learn, comparing what I already knew of the book in English to the Arabic. Odd that "elves" are translated to "jinn" - which translates to "fairy" or "goblin".My one complaint is about the binding of the book. It all feels very stiff. In some sections the pages have pulled apart and the binding is laid bare. While the book itself looks great, its construction feels a little cheap.
