A great family game
I was concerned that with no theme that my girlfriend's family would not like this game but I was wrong. It is a strong favourite for all ages and both girls and boys. What I like about this game is that it takes just 2 minutes to explain the rules but takes quite a lot of thought to play and master it. All the boys play it right down to 5 years old although the young ones need a little help. In the middle of the game it can take quite a lot of thought to make the best moves.I think it is best played with 4 people. You can play 3 player and take turns to play the dummy hand or play with 2 and control 2 colours. In the box you get a large plastic board and 4 sets of 21 coloured shapes. All the pieces are sturdy and well made plastic. The shapes slot into the grooves of the board and are relatively stable but not completely knock proof. It is important not to loose any bits because that ruins the game so I suggest that you keep the bits in baggies.Games are about 30 minutes long.Very Pleased that I got this game and I recommend it for all ages if you like a game that will make you think strategically.

Good family game
Blokus is a board game that is superficially related to Tetris. You have a square board and the idea is that you place coloured shapes onto the board, your pieces can only touch on their corners, and as the 4 players each place their pieces on the board you start having to think about how you can get your pieces to fit in the gaps left by their pieces. Each game takes about 20 minutes to play and my kids (10 and 7) enjoy playing it with their mum and dad.On the surface it's a simple place the pieces game, but given that there are 3 other people playing it can become quite tactical. I've played it with most of the people I know and it kept several people (ages 10 to 80) occupied on a new years day. You can even play some single player game variations on the game. The biggest problem is that you need 4 people to play a game, but it does make an excellent family game.Just a very late addition to my review - you can indeed play with 2 or 3 players quite happily. Playing with three generates a very strange set of strategy as each of the three players takes turns playing the remaining colour on its go (it works really well), but I do find the two player version, where each player plays two colours, the least satisfying. After several months it still gets a regular dust off as it's just good fun.

Advertised as XL version but recieved normal size
I love the game but have only given 3 stars as it is advertised as the XL 13inch x 13inch version and I have recieved the normal 10inch x 10inch. This is also a comment made in other reviews, their advert needs to be changed or they need to supply what they are advertising.

Not the XL version, only the normal sized one
Gave 3 stars as the imaging makes it seem like you're getting the XL version but as other reviews have said the one received was the regular sized one which I ordered at the same time, so now I have two copies which I sent one back.

Played often
This wins prizes in our house because the children get it out voluntarily instead of TV (sometimes). I'm not sure they've ever fully read the rules but they like to play their way, using two colours each if there are only two of them playing, one for three or more and counting number of squares (not pieces) left when they can make no more moves to determine the winner. They even chose it to take on holiday with us and didn't lose or break bits. The box is a bit battered but the game is ok.

FALSELY ADVERTISED!!! NOT XL VERSION!!
You will NOT receive an XL version, just a normal STANDARD version. Steer clear if I was you unless you want to pay more for a normal version of Blokus. Completely false advertisement!!

Mattel Blokus review
A very absorbing game requiring a little concentration, and mental analysis, to win. A well made product, but something better than sealable plastic bags could be used for storage of the playing pieces. It occurred to me that it might be useful to have a couple of clear pieces which could be cut and coloured to replace any pieces which might get lost (or a spare transparent set). If a piece did get lost you would probably have to remove that part from the other colours to make things fair.
